Like many communities in Ontario, Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma is in the midst of a major public health challenge: problematic substance use and addiction. In 2017, Sault Ste. Marie and Area had higher death rates, hospitalization rates, Hepatitis C acquisitions, newborn complications and associated mental health disorders than virtually every other district of its size in Canada.
Docs on Ice 2020 will be raising money for community-wide programming that will help to reduce youth substance exposure, reduce youth drug use and treat youth who are suffering from the effects of addiction in Sault Ste. Marie. We are proud to partner with the Algoma Family Services Foundation in this endeavour.
“Our hockey tournament will showcase all of the qualities that make Sault Ste. Marie a truly outstanding community - its natural beauty, our creativity and energy, our genuine hospitality, our proud traditions and our tremendous potential. All proceeds raised from this event will be applied to effective, evidence-based projects that will strengthen our youth, our families and our community.” -Dr. Bob Maloney, Chair of Docs on Ice 2020
