Welcome to Docs on Ice 2014
On behalf of the 2014 organizing committee, welcome to the home of Docs on Ice 2014 – Newmarket!
We are all looking forward to another wonderful two days of hockey, entertainment and socializing in the great towns of Newmarket and Aurora.
“Docs (Doctors of Ontario Charity) on Ice” started in 1983 in Peterborough in memory of Dr. Peter Howes, a local urologist, who died in a motor vehicle accident in the early 80’s. The tournament has steadily grown in size since then and has been hosted all over Ontario. Over $1 million dollars has been raised since its inception in 1983.
In recent years there has been an even greater emphasis on the charitable aspect. In 2011 Docs on Ice in Oakville, raised $150,000 to support the Alzheimer Society of Halton. In 2012 the tournament raised $200,000 for a youth brain concussion program under the auspices of the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation. Most recently in 2013 the tournament in Stratford raised $140,000 for the Ontario Lung Association.
Now, in its 32nd year, Docs on Ice is coming to Newmarket. Docs on Ice 2014 is proud to partner with the Canadian Mental Health Association – York Region. Charity, Camaraderie and Sportsmanship are the three principles of Ontario’s largest annual physicians ice hockey tournament. It will be attended by 900 doctors, special guests including NHL players and alumni, media personnel, and television personalities. All proceeds go directly to this year’s charitable recipient, the Canadian Mental Health Association serving York Region and South Simcoe.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Newmarket for Docs on Ice 2014!
